Stormwater management for Nowy Wełnowiec in Katowice

Challenge

Nowy Wełnowiec is a large-scale mixed-use district development in Katowice, where technical solutions must work seamlessly with an ambitious urban and architectural concept featuring extensive greenery and carefully designed shared spaces.

Solution

RetencjaPL is involved in the design process led by JEMS Architekci and carried out for the investor, Capital Park Group. Stormwater management has been treated as an integral part of designing the new district — both in terms of technical drainage and the use of water within the blue-green landscape.
The solutions must take into account the interaction between different development levels, underground infrastructure, and the role of water in shaping an urban environment that is both user-friendly and resilient to climate change.

Benefits

This approach makes it possible to combine safe drainage with retention and the use of water in the landscape, rather than simply conveying stormwater rapidly to receiving systems.
The project creates a foundation for improving the resilience of the new district to intense rainfall, protecting buildings and infrastructure, and using water as an integral element of blue-green public space for residents. It is an example of design in which stormwater management becomes part of the city’s adaptation to climate change. A well-developed concept also creates the opportunity to deliver the project despite strict limits on discharge to the municipal sewer system.
