Water Level Monitoring in a Retention Basin

Challenge

For years, the City of Strzelce Opolskie had been struggling with local flooding caused by intense rainfall. During heavy storms, runoff flowing from the city centre onto nearby meadows would flood, among other areas, the local football field, surrounding streets, and the basements of houses in the Nowa Wieś district. To address this issue, the city decided to construct a retention basin with a surface area of 15,000 square metres and a depth of 1.5 metres. Outflow control is carried out manually using stoplogs, which allow adjustment to the current hydrological situation based on ongoing measurements.

Solution

To enable effective water flow management at the retention basin, we installed an OTT ecoLog1000 station. The station was mounted at the basin outlet and provides information on the current water level. During high-water events, it warns city managers about potentially dangerous situations. The basin was designed as a dry retention basin, through which open ditches carrying stormwater flow. The installed ecoLog1000 station is also equipped with a conductivity sensor, which means it additionally provides information on water salinity.

Benefits

The city gained a basin that protects it against local flooding. Real-time information transmitted from the installed sensor allows city managers to respond dynamically to crisis situations, helping to ensure safety across the city.
