Design rainfall intensity model for the need of urban hydrology of the city of Poznań

Project aim

The aim of the project was to prepare an updated local precipitation model (design rainfall intensity model) for the city of Poznań. This model will serve as a basis for proper designing of stormwater drainage in the future and will also be used for both hydrologic and hydrodynamic models and systems for the proper drainage in the city.

Project description

The current precipitation model served as the basis for the preparation of a specific concept of stormwater drainage of the Old Market Square area in Poznań with implementation of stormwater retention system and reusing it in-situ (in order to resign from the current “collect and drain” concept).

Solutions applied

Any precipitation model for a city should be based on long-term data collection i.e. 20-30 years of collecting data on local precipitation series. Having this in mind, high time resolution data on precipitation was used. The data was collected at the nearest weather station of the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management located at Poznań-Ławica Airport (52°25′16″N, 16°49′35″E) at the altitude on 94 m a.s.l. The weather station is an airport weather station (I class) and is located close to the city centre of Poznań about 7 km away.
