Design rainfall intensity model for the need of urban hydrology of the city of Rumia

Project aim

The aim of the project was to prepare a local precipitation model for the city of Rumia. This model will be the basis for proper designing of stormwater drainage systems and will be the database for hydrology and hydrodynamic models of the city’s drainage systems composed of closed stormwater canals with a complementary system of open channels, which often function as receivers of stormwater runoffs. The updated precipitaion model that was order will also be the basis for the preparation of precipitation forecast model (design rainfall intensity) up to 2050 following the climate change scenario for the urban hydrology of the city of Rumia.

Project description

The precipitation model was prepared with real observation data from the period no shorter than five years. The aim of this study was using reliable precipitation data, best collected over the past 20-30 years with high time resolution adjusted to designing and modelling characteristics of urban drainage systems. Moreover, it was to be reliable data, obtained from appropriate meteorological services, recorded with rain gauges meeting the national measuring standards and installed in weather stations at specific weather condition.

Solutions applied

Any precipitation model for a city should be based on long-term data collection i.e. 20-30 years of collecting data on local precipitation series. Unfortunately, the city of Rumia has no such data. The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management has not systematically collected data on precipitation on the area of Rumia in high time resolution in the last 30 years.

Having this in mind, data on precipitation in high time resolution, taken at the nearest weather station in Gdynia was used.
