Blue-green infrastructure (BGI) is a set of solutions that help retain, delay, treat, and reuse stormwater as close as possible to where it falls. It combines “green” elements, such as rain gardens and green roofs, with “blue” elements, including retention basins, ditches, watercourses, and stormwater retention systems. Its purpose is to relieve pressure on stormwater sewer systems, reduce flood risk, and increase urban resilience to drought and climate change. Well-designed BGI also improves the microclimate, the water balance within a development site, and the quality of public space.
